SUSIE

The Smart Upper Stage for Innovative Exploration (SUSIE) is a proposed reusable spacecraft by ArianeGroup for the European Space Agency (ESA). Key details:

  • Designed to replace the payload fairing on the Ariane 6 rocket. Can launch cargo or up to 5 astronauts.
  • Fully reusable vertical takeoff and vertical landing vehicle. Performs propulsive landing using engines.
  • 12 meters long, 5 meters in diameter, 25 tonnes mass when fueled.
  • Internal cargo bay volume of 40 cubic meters. Can transport 7 tonnes of cargo.
  • Intended to provide Europe independent crew and cargo access to low Earth orbit. Currently relies on the US.
  • Compatible with future European rockets like Themis and Prometheus. Part of ArianeGroup’s proposed family of reusable launch vehicles.
  • Can also enable lunar missions when coupled with a Space Transfer Module for propulsion.
  • Unveiled in 2022. Still a concept and requires approval and funding from European ministers.
  • Some concerns raised about technical feasibility, mass constraints for Ariane 6, and whether Europe should prioritize this over other programs.

Summary

SUSIE is a proposed reusable spacecraft concept by ArianeGroup aimed at providing Europe with independent crew and cargo capabilities. It is designed to launch on the upcoming Ariane 6 and future European rockets. The concept was recently unveiled but still requires approval to move forward.
