Space Perspective is an American private aerospace manufacturer specializing in high-altitude balloon-based space tourism. Headquartered in Titusville, Florida, the company is developing Spaceship Neptune, a pressurized capsule designed to transport passengers to the stratosphere using a massive hydrogen-filled balloon.
The company was established in 2019 by Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum. Both founders were original crew members of the Biosphere 2 project and co-founded Paragon Space Development Corporation and World View Enterprises. Their extensive experience in life support systems and high-altitude balloon technology underpins Space Perspective’s mission to offer a gentle voyage to the edge of space.
Spaceship Neptune is a spherical carbon-composite gondola measuring 16 feet in diameter, providing a pressurized volume for up to eight passengers and one captain. The capsule features 15 large windows coated with a UV-reflective layer, offering panoramic views of Earth. Amenities include a “Space Spa” restroom, reclining seats, and a bar within the “Space Lounge.” Safety measures encompass four reverse parachutes and a “Splashcone” to soften water landings.
The ascent is facilitated by the SpaceBalloon, a high-altitude balloon standing approximately 600 feet tall when inflated and filled with over 24 million cubic feet of hydrogen. The six-hour journey includes a two-hour ascent to 100,000 feet, a two-hour stay at peak altitude, and a two-hour descent, culminating in an ocean splashdown. The entire experience is designed to be as smooth as a commercial flight, with no heavy g-forces or specialized training required.
In June 2020, Space Perspective announced plans to offer balloon flights to nearly 100,000 feet, pricing tickets at $125,000 per seat. To secure a seat, customers were required to make a reservation with a deposit of $1,000 per ticket. By July 2023, Space Perspective had sold over 1,600 tickets, amassing at least $1.6 million in reservation deposits. By December 2020, the company secured $7 million in seed funding and planned its first uncrewed test flight for 2021. In October 2021, a successful Series A funding round raised $40 million, enabling further development. In February 2024, the company completed the construction of its first Spaceship Neptune gondola, leading to an uncrewed test flight in September 2024, launched and recovered using the MS Voyager platform supply vessel. In October 2024, Sir Richard Branson invested in the company and announced plans to co-pilot the first crewed flight in 2025.
As of January 2025, Space Perspective faces significant financial challenges, including $90,295 in unpaid rent to the Titusville-Cocoa Airport Authority, leading to a five-day eviction notice requiring payment or vacating the premises by January 22nd. The company has also experienced mass furloughs, with operations reportedly ceasing entirely. Former employees have alleged mismanagement by the founders, citing a pattern of disregarding expert advice, prioritizing public relations over operations, and setting unrealistic timelines. These issues have culminated in a standstill of the company’s activities, leaving the status of the reservation deposits uncertain and casting doubt on future operations.
Space Perspective has made significant strides in the nascent space tourism industry, offering a unique and accessible journey to the stratosphere. However, recent financial difficulties and allegations of mismanagement highlight the challenges inherent in pioneering new frontiers. The company’s ability to navigate these obstacles will determine its role in the future of commercial space exploration.
