Starship Flight 14’s Launch Date Is Now NET September 28

SpaceX has moved the planned launch of Starship Flight 14 from September 22 to no earlier than September 28, 2026, extending preparations for what is planned to be the Starship program’s first orbital mission.

On September 17, 2026, SpaceX announced that Flight 14 is now targeted for Monday, September 28, pending regulatory approval. SpaceX did not publicly provide a reason for the six-day schedule change. The schedule change does not alter the major objectives SpaceX has announced for the mission. Flight 14 remains intended to mark a transition from Starship’s intentionally suborbital flight tests toward orbital operations.

Starship’s First Planned Orbital Mission

Previous Starship flight tests followed trajectories that did not complete a full Earth orbit. With Flight 14, SpaceX plans to attempt orbital insertion of the Starship upper stage for the first time. SpaceX’s published mission profile calls for Starship to remain in orbit for approximately six revolutions around Earth before conducting an in-space deorbit burn and proceeding toward a controlled Pacific Ocean splashdown. The substantially longer mission would allow SpaceX to test capabilities that were not required during earlier suborbital Starship flights.

Three of the Starlink V3 spacecraft are also planned to carry cameras positioned to photograph Starship’s thermal-protection system after deployment, providing additional information about the condition of the vehicle before atmospheric reentry.

Why the Schedule Change Matters

A six-day schedule adjustment does not by itself indicate a fundamental problem with the vehicle or mission. As of September 18, 2026, SpaceX has not publicly attributed the change to a specific technical, regulatory, weather, range, or operational issue.

What makes Flight 14 important is the combination of milestones planned for a single mission: orbital insertion, deployment of operational Starlink V3 satellites, extended orbital flight, an in-space deorbit maneuver, atmospheric reentry, and controlled ocean recovery.

The mission is also important for the future of the Starlink system. SpaceX is developing the substantially larger Starlink V3 generation around Starship’s greater payload capacity, making routine Starship operations an important element of the company’s longer-term satellite deployment strategy.

For now, September 28, 2026, is a target rather than a guaranteed launch date. SpaceX states that the flight remains pending regulatory approval, and the launch date can also change because of vehicle readiness, range availability, weather, or other operational considerations.

The immediate change is therefore straightforward: Starship Flight 14 has moved from September 22 to no earlier than September 28, 2026, while its planned orbital and Starlink V3 deployment objectives remain unchanged.

If those objectives are completed, Flight 14 would represent Starship’s first transition from intentionally suborbital testing to sustained orbital operations.
