The World Meteorological Organization’s Observing Systems Capability Analysis and Review Tool (WMO OSCAR) is a database and web application designed to store, analyze, and access data about the current and expected capabilities of space-based and surface-based observing systems.
The tool is split into two components:
- OSCAR/Space: This component provides information about past, current, and expected future satellites and instruments dedicated to climate monitoring and weather prediction.
- OSCAR/Surface: This part provides data on surface-based weather stations and other observational tools.
In general, the main purpose of WMO OSCAR is to assist in the planning and optimization of the overall configuration of observational systems for meteorology, climate, water and related applications. The tool can help identify potential gaps in observational coverage, assess the impact of new observing systems, and contribute to future planning.
You can access the database at oscar.wmo.int.
