The European Space Agency expects to decide by the end of November whether its Themis reusable rocket demonstrator can attempt its first hop before Esrange’s winter shutdown. Speaking on October 22, 2026, ESA’s space transportation director, Géraldine Naja, identified approaching winter conditions in northern Sweden as a constraint on the flight campaign.
According to European Spaceflight’s reporting, the agency had previously expected the first hop in the first quarter of 2026. The latest statement establishes a decision deadline without committing to a flight date. An ESA spokesperson confirmed the November decision point.
What Themis Is Designed to Test
ESA describes Themis as a prototype for developing rocket recovery and reuse technologies. Its Prometheus engine uses methane fuel. The program combines propulsion development with the systems required to operate a stage through launch, recovery, and subsequent reuse.
The initial flight campaign takes place at Esrange in cooperation with the European Commission’s SALTO project. Low-altitude hops allow engineers to test controlled ascent and return within a limited flight profile. The campaign’s objective is to demonstrate that the vehicle can be recovered and launched again.
Ground preparation provides part of the evidence needed before those flights. As explained in New Space Economy’s rehearsal coverage, the second ground rehearsal tested operations under cryogenic conditions. A rehearsal checks preparation and handling of very cold propellants; flight testing adds the vehicle’s behavior during ascent and landing.
The Next Scheduling Decision
European Spaceflight reports that SALTO has a €42.8 million budget and plans two low-altitude hops. Naja also referred to a requirement for a hop before June 2027, but the reporting could not establish whether that deadline covered one flight or both.
The immediate decision concerns whether the first flight can fit within Esrange’s remaining operating window before winter shutdown. ESA’s November assessment will determine whether the campaign proceeds with a 2026 attempt or requires a later opportunity.
