L-1S No. 5 — launch
Date in UTC
Zond L1S-2 was carried on the second test launch of the Soviet N1 heavy-lift rocket on July 3, 1969. The payload included a Zond-derived capsule and lunar-program test equipment. An engine-system failure shortly after liftoff led to shutdown of the rocket’s engines, and the vehicle fell back onto the launch complex and exploded. The escape system carried the capsule clear of the pad.
