Hubble deployed from the Space Shuttle
Date as reported
The Hubble Space Telescope was deployed from the Space Shuttle Discovery on April 25, 1990, one day after the STS-31 launch. Operating above most of Earth’s atmosphere, the observatory was designed to make ultraviolet, visible-light and near-infrared observations. An error in its primary mirror initially limited image quality; the first servicing mission in 1993 installed corrective optics. Subsequent servicing missions upgraded its instruments and extended its scientific capabilities.
