NASA Delays ESCAPADE Mars Mission Launch on Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket to 2025

NASA has announced that the ESCAPADE (Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers) mission, originally scheduled to launch on Blue Origin‘s New Glenn rocket on October 13, 2024, will be postponed until at least spring 2025. The decision was made due to concerns that the New Glenn rocket may not be ready in time for the mission’s launch window.

Mission Overview

ESCAPADE is a dual-spacecraft mission designed to study Marsmagnetosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. The mission aims to understand how this interaction influences the escape of the planet’s atmosphere. The two identical smallsats, named Blue and Gold, were set to be launched as part of NASA’s SIMPLEx (Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration) program.

Reasons for the Delay

NASA decided to halt pre-launch preparations for ESCAPADE to avoid significant costs, scheduling issues, and technical challenges that could arise if the launch is delayed. The main concern was the potential need to remove fuel from the spacecraft if New Glenn misses the October launch window.

Bradley Smith, director of NASA’s Launch Services Office, emphasized the importance of having sufficient margin in prelaunch work to ensure readiness for the tight planetary window. The next possible launch window for ESCAPADE is now set for spring 2025.

Impact on New Glenn’s Inaugural Launch

With ESCAPADE no longer part of New Glenn’s debut mission, Blue Origin will instead carry technology for its Blue Ring orbital platform on the rocket’s first flight. The company has agreed to accelerate New Glenn’s second flight to align with the Mars mission’s launch window in 2025.

Despite the change in payload, Blue Origin is not expected to significantly alter its launch preparations. The rocket’s inaugural launch could be postponed by a few weeks to early November 2024.

NASA’s Commitment to the Mission

NASA officials have emphasized their commitment to seeing ESCAPADE safely launched to Mars, despite the delay. Nicky Fox, NASA associate administrator for science, stated, “We’re committed to seeing ESCAPADE safely into space, and I look forward to seeing it off the ground and on its trip to Mars.”

The ESCAPADE mission is crucial for studying Mars’ atmosphere and gathering information to protect astronauts and spacecraft from space weather as we explore further into the solar system.

Summary

The ESCAPADE mission, a collaboration between NASA and Blue Origin, has been delayed from its original October 2024 launch date to spring 2025 due to concerns about the readiness of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket. Despite the setback, both organizations remain committed to the mission’s scientific objectives of studying Mars’ magnetosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. The delay allows more time for preparation and ensures the safety and success of the project as we continue to explore the solar system.
