Their constellation of small “Dove” satellites is designed to image the entire landmass of the Earth every single day. While the resolution of these images is lower than that from Maxar, their frequency provides an unprecedented ability to monitor change over time, from tracking deforestation to observing agricultural yields.

Other major contributors include Airbus Defence and Space, which operates satellites like Pléiades and SPOT, and various governmental space agencies. A Look at the Hardware: The Satellites Themselves

The satellites responsible for this imagery are marvels of engineering, orbiting the Earth in carefully controlled paths. Most Earth-observation satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), typically at altitudes between 300 and 1,200 miles. This proximity to the planet allows their sophisticated cameras to capture high-resolution images. Many are placed in a sun-synchronous orbit, a specific type of LEO path that ensures the satellite passes over any given point on Earth at the same local solar time. This consistency in lighting is essential for comparing images taken on different days and for creating a visually uniform global mosaic.

The defining characteristic of an imaging satellite is its spatial resolution. This term refers to the size of the smallest object that can be distinguished in an image, often expressed in centimeters or meters per pixel. This raw data cannot be sent to Earth over a Wi-Fi connection. It must be downlinked via powerful radio signals to a network of ground stations scattered across the globe. Once the data is securely on the ground, the real work of processing begins. Raw satellite images are warped by numerous distortions that must be corrected. Densely populated regions are typically covered by aerial photography (taken from airplanes), which can offer even higher resolution than satellites and can be acquired more flexibly. In contrast, remote, sparsely populated areas like the Siberian tundra or the middle of the Sahara Desert might only be updated every few years. The decision to update an area depends on factors like the availability of new imagery from providers, the cost of acquisition, and the absence of cloud cover, which is a persistent obstacle to capturing clear optical images from space.

“You Are Here”: The Magic of GPS

While satellite imagery provides the canvas, another satellite system is responsible for placing the user on that canvas: the Global Positioning System, or GPS. This technology is what allows your phone to know its precise location anywhere on Earth, enabling the turn-by-turn navigation that is central to the Google Maps experience.

GPS is a satellite-based radionavigation system owned by the United States Government and operated by the United States Space Force. The principle behind GPS is a mathematical concept called trilateration. The receiver in your phone picks up the signals from multiple satellites. Since the radio signals travel at the speed of light, the receiver can calculate its distance from each satellite by measuring the tiny time delay between when the signal was sent and when it was received. With the distance to one satellite, your location is known to be somewhere on the surface of a giant sphere with that satellite at its center. With the distance to a second satellite, your location is narrowed down to the circle where the two spheres intersect. A third satellite narrows your location down to just two points, and a fourth satellite is used to resolve which of those two points is correct and, importantly, to synchronize the receiver’s less-perfect clock with the atomic clocks in the satellites. This fourth measurement is what provides a precise three-dimensional position (latitude, longitude, and altitude).

Beyond GPS: The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)

Modern smartphones don’t rely solely on the American GPS. They use receivers capable of listening to signals from multiple national satellite navigation systems. The general term for all such systems is the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Using signals from more than one constellation significantly improves the performance of location services.

Other major GNSS constellations include:

  • GLONASS: Russia’s global system, which was the second to achieve worldwide operational capability.
  • Galileo: A global system operated by the European Union, designed specifically for civilian use and offering high-precision services.
  • BeiDou: China’s global system, which became fully operational worldwide in 2020.

A multi-GNSS receiver in a smartphone can access a much larger number of satellites at any given time. This leads to a faster “time to first fix” (the time it takes to calculate an initial position) and improved accuracy and reliability. This is particularly noticeable in challenging environments like “urban canyons” – the deep valleys between tall buildings in cities – where the view of the sky is obstructed. With more satellites to choose from, there’s a higher chance that the receiver can lock onto the required four or more signals needed for a precise location.

Enhancing Accuracy on the Ground

Even with multiple GNSS constellations, satellite signals can be weak indoors or blocked by dense overhead cover. To overcome this, your phone supplements satellite data with a variety of ground-based signals and onboard sensors.

Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is a system that uses your cellular network to help your phone’s GPS receiver. When you open Google Maps, your phone can quickly download data from a server that tells it exactly where the GNSS satellites are supposed to be in the sky at that moment. This assistance data dramatically reduces the time it takes for your phone to find the satellite signals and calculate its position.

Furthermore, your phone uses other clues to refine its location. It can scan for nearby Wi-Fi networks and compare the list of networks it sees to a massive database that maps Wi-Fi hotspots to geographic locations. It can also use triangulation between multiple cell towers to get an approximate position. Finally, sensors within the phone itself, like the accelerometer and gyroscope, track your movement and orientation, while a barometer can detect changes in altitude. Google Maps fuses the data from all these sources – satellites, cell towers, Wi-Fi, and internal sensors – to produce the smooth, accurate, and responsive blue dot on the map.

More Than Just Pictures and Dots: Layering the Data

The satellite imagery and the GPS location dot form the foundation of Google Maps, but its true power comes from the many additional layers of information placed on top of this foundation. This is where the digital model becomes a rich, useful representation of the real world. Much of this data is collected not from space, but from the ground up.

Street View: A Ground-Level Perspective

Google Street View provides 360-degree panoramic imagery from street level, allowing users to virtually explore neighborhoods around the world. This data is collected by a fleet of specially equipped cars, as well as by operators using “Trekkers” (a backpack-mounted system for pedestrian areas), snowmobiles, and even camels. LiDAR works by bouncing laser beams off surfaces to measure distances, creating a detailed 3D point cloud of the surrounding environment.

Once collected, this massive amount of data undergoes heavy processing. The individual photos are stitched together to create seamless panoramas. Sophisticated algorithms are used to automatically detect and blur faces and license plates to protect privacy. The 3D data from the LiDAR scanners helps to accurately position the Street View imagery within the broader 3D model of the world and is also used to help extract information like building shapes and road geometry.

Building the Map: Roads, Buildings, and Points of Interest

How does Google know the name of every street, the location of every restaurant, and the outline of every building? This core map data comes from a multitude of sources and is constantly being refined.

The initial “base map” is often created using data from government agencies, such as the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) files, which contain information about roads, boundaries, and other geographic features. This is supplemented with data purchased from commercial cartography companies.

This base map is then improved and updated through a combination of technology and human effort. Machine learning algorithms analyze satellite, aerial, and Street View imagery to automatically trace road networks and extract building footprints. For example, an algorithm can be trained to recognize the distinct shape and texture of a road from an overhead image and add it to the map.

Crowdsourcing also plays a huge part. Google collects anonymized location data from millions of Android users who have opted in to share it. By analyzing the paths that many devices travel, Google can infer the existence of roads and verify their routes. If the data shows many people turning where the map shows no road, it’s a strong signal that the map needs an update. This same aggregated data is what powers the live traffic feature.

Finally, direct user contributions are invaluable. The Google Local Guides program encourages users to add and review businesses, upload photos, and suggest edits to the map. Every time a user corrects a business’s operating hours or adds a new point of interest, they are helping to make the map a more accurate reflection of the world.

3D Imagery and Photogrammetry

The immersive 3D view available in many cities within Google Earth and Maps is not created from a single satellite photo. It’s built using a technique called photogrammetry. This process involves taking a large number of overlapping photographs of an area from different angles. For this, Google primarily uses aerial imagery captured from airplanes flying in a grid pattern over a city.

By analyzing how objects appear to shift in position between the multiple images, specialized software can calculate depth and construct detailed 3D geometric models of buildings, terrain, and even individual trees. For optical satellites that capture images in visible light, clouds are the primary adversary. A satellite passing over a target area is useless if the ground is obscured by cloud cover. In regions with persistent cloudiness, like the tropics or certain coastal areas, it can be very difficult to acquire a clean, recent image. This is a major factor contributing to the varying ages of imagery found across the globe.

Privacy Considerations

The very act of mapping the world in such detail raises important questions about privacy. The collection of Street View imagery and the use of anonymized location data for traffic analysis are subjects of public and regulatory scrutiny. In response, companies like Google have implemented policies such as automatic blurring of faces and license plates and have provided users with tools to manage their location history and data contributions.
