Firefly and SSC Space Plan Two Alpha Launches From Sweden in 2028

Firefly Aerospace and Sweden’s SSC Space have taken another significant step toward establishing orbital launch operations from Esrange Space Center in northern Sweden. On September 9, 2026, the companies announced a multi-launch agreement covering two Firefly Alpha missions from Esrange, with both launches targeted for no earlier than 2028.

The agreement does not change Alpha’s classification as an operational small-lift launch vehicle, but it materially expands the rocket’s planned geographic footprint. Alpha currently launches from the United States, while Firefly is building toward a model in which the same launch system can operate from multiple domestic and international locations.

The two Swedish missions will serve Swedish national-security customers while also offering capacity for commercial rideshare payloads. Under the agreement, SSC Space has secured the full payload capacity of the two Alpha missions and will be able to allocate that capacity among government and commercial customers.

Alpha Expands Beyond Its U.S. Launch Base

Alpha is Firefly’s operational small launch vehicle. The rocket is designed to place approximately 1,030 kilograms into a 300-kilometer low Earth orbit and approximately 630 kilograms into a 500-kilometer Sun-synchronous orbit.

Firefly describes Alpha as the only operational U.S. launch vehicle centered on the approximately one-ton payload class. That places it between very small dedicated launchers and larger medium-lift systems such as Rocket Lab’s developing Neutron vehicle.

Alpha returned to orbital flight on March 11, 2026, with Flight 7, designated Stairway to Seven. The mission successfully reached orbit and also tested technologies intended for the forthcoming Alpha Block II configuration. Firefly plans to introduce the full Block II configuration with Flight 8.

The Swedish agreement therefore does not represent a plan to introduce an unproven launch vehicle in Europe. Instead, Firefly and SSC Space intend to establish an additional launch location for an existing operational rocket while Firefly continues to improve the Alpha architecture.

That distinction is important because launch-site expansion can become a separate competitive factor from launch-vehicle development. A provider capable of flying the same rocket from multiple sites can potentially offer customers greater flexibility over orbit, launch timing, national jurisdiction and mission resilience.

Why Esrange Matters

Esrange Space Center is located near Kiruna in northern Sweden and has operated for decades as a center for sounding rockets, scientific balloons, satellite communications and other space activities. SSC Space is now developing orbital launch capability at the site.

Firefly Alpha is planned to operate from Launch Complex 3C.

By June 30, 2026, Firefly and SSC Space reported that several major elements of the Alpha launch infrastructure had already been completed. These included the launch control center, payload-processing facility, launch-vehicle integration building, tracking and control systems, and security and storage facilities.

The companies had also established the required transatlantic regulatory frameworks and secured an agreement involving the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration. Construction of the launch pad itself was continuing when the September 9 launch agreement was announced.

The two contracted launches therefore represent more than an expression of interest. They connect the physical infrastructure being developed at Esrange with identified missions targeted for 2028.

For SSC Space, that helps move Esrange from being principally a sounding-rocket, balloon and ground-services facility toward becoming a location capable of supporting orbital satellite launches.

Sweden Is Building Sovereign Launch Capability

The agreement also fits within Sweden’s broader effort to strengthen its national space capabilities.

The Swedish government previously allocated approximately SEK 1 billion through 2032 to develop capabilities that include improved space situational awareness, expanded infrastructure at Esrange and the ability of the Swedish Armed Forces to conduct multiple satellite launches.

SSC Space and the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration have been working on this capability, with Firefly serving as SSC Space’s launch-vehicle partner for the orbital-launch component.

The September 2026 contract provides a clearer path for turning that infrastructure investment into actual missions.

For Sweden, the strategic value is not simply possessing a launch pad. Launch capability can provide greater control over when certain national-security spacecraft are placed into orbit, reduce dependence on a limited set of foreign launch locations and support the development of domestic space-related infrastructure and expertise.

It does not make Sweden completely independent of foreign launch technology. Alpha remains an American launch vehicle supplied by Firefly. The model is better understood as a partnership combining Swedish launch infrastructure and customer relationships with a U.S.-developed orbital launch system.

A Different Model for International Launch

The arrangement illustrates Firefly’s developing approach to international launch operations.

Firefly has described the strategy as a “launch as a franchise” model. Rather than requiring every customer to send spacecraft to one permanent Firefly launch site, the company is developing the ability to support Alpha operations from additional locations.

In the Esrange arrangement, SSC Space controls the launch facility and has contracted for the full payload capacity of the two missions. SSC can then allocate that capacity among Swedish government payloads and commercial customers.

This creates a different commercial structure from a conventional mission in which an individual satellite operator contracts directly with a launch company for a flight.

It may also provide SSC with greater control over how launch capacity is marketed and combined with its other services, including payload preparation, ground infrastructure, spacecraft operations and satellite communications.

Launch-Site Diversification Becomes Part of the Product

The Esrange agreement also demonstrates that competition in the launch market increasingly involves more than rocket performance.

Payload capacity, reliability and price remain central considerations, but launch location can affect the value of a service. Different launch sites provide different orbital access, regulatory environments, geographic advantages and operational options.

For national-security customers, geographically distributed launch capability can also provide resilience. Dependence on a small number of launch complexes creates potential bottlenecks if a site becomes unavailable because of an accident, infrastructure problem, weather event, range conflict or security concern.

Firefly is therefore expanding Alpha around a more distributed launch architecture.

In addition to its existing operations from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, Firefly has been preparing additional Alpha capability at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Its August 2026 investor materials indicated that the Virginia site was targeting its first Alpha mission no earlier than 2027.

The same materials identified Esrange’s first Alpha launch as targeted no earlier than 2028.

Firefly has also discussed deployable and potentially sea-based launch concepts intended to expand the number of locations from which Alpha could operate.

If successfully implemented, the result would be a launch system whose competitive proposition includes not merely the rocket itself but a network of possible launch locations.

The European Dimension

The Firefly-SSC partnership is also relevant to Europe’s broader effort to increase access to space.

Europe has historically depended heavily on a small number of established launch locations and launch systems. At the same time, European governments and companies are seeking greater resilience, sovereign capability and flexibility as satellite applications become increasingly important to communications, Earth observation, navigation, defense and intelligence.

An operational Alpha service from Esrange would not replace larger European launch vehicles. With approximately one tonne of LEO capacity, Alpha addresses a different part of the market from larger systems intended to deploy substantially heavier spacecraft.

Its potential role is instead in dedicated small-satellite missions, responsive launches, national-security payloads and missions for which controlling launch timing and orbital destination may justify the economics of a smaller dedicated rocket.

Commercial rideshare capacity could broaden the customer base further. SSC’s ability to divide the available capacity among several customers could help fill launches that would otherwise carry only a single government spacecraft.

What the Agreement Does Not Mean

The September 9 announcement should also be interpreted cautiously.

The two missions are targeted no earlier than 2028. They are not launches scheduled for specific dates.

Several steps remain before Alpha can fly from Esrange, including completion of the launch pad, integration and validation of Firefly-specific ground systems, mission preparation and completion of applicable regulatory processes.

Launch schedules are also inherently susceptible to changes caused by vehicle availability, payload readiness, regulatory approvals, range scheduling and technical issues.

The agreement therefore establishes an important commercial and strategic milestone, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that both launches will occur during 2028.

What Changes in Firefly’s Launch Roadmap

From the perspective of the evolving U.S. orbital-launch market, Alpha’s fundamental status remains unchanged as of September 10, 2026.

Classification: Small lift.

Status: Operational.

Current U.S. launch site: Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Additional U.S. launch capability: Wallops Flight Facility, targeting first Alpha launch no earlier than 2027.

International launch site: Esrange Space Center, Sweden.

New contracted milestone: Two Esrange Alpha missions targeted no earlier than 2028.

The important change is therefore not a new rocket or a reclassification of Alpha. It is the emergence of a clearer international operating model for the vehicle.

Firefly is attempting to turn Alpha from a rocket associated with a single primary range into a launch system capable of operating across a distributed network of sites.

Why the Two Flights Matter

Two launches alone will not transform the global launch market. Their broader significance lies in what they could demonstrate.

If Firefly and SSC successfully establish repeatable Alpha operations from Esrange, the arrangement could show that an American commercial launch vehicle can be integrated into a European national launch infrastructure and operated as part of a broader sovereign-access strategy.

It could also provide a model for countries that want domestic or regional launch capability without developing an entirely new orbital rocket themselves.

For Firefly, that expands the addressable market for Alpha beyond conventional U.S.-based launch services. For SSC Space and Sweden, it provides a route toward orbital-launch capability using an existing vehicle while domestic infrastructure, regulatory systems and operational expertise continue to develop.

The September 9, 2026 agreement should therefore be understood as part of a broader evolution in launch competition. The market is increasingly being shaped not only by how much payload a rocket can carry or how inexpensive a launch can become, but also by where a vehicle can launch, how rapidly it can respond, who controls access to the launch site and how resilient the overall launch network can be.

For Alpha, the two planned missions from Esrange represent an important step in that direction.
