Eutelsat and EuroSkyPark announced an expansion of satellite connectivity for Germany’s electricity transmission operator Amprion on October 20, 2026. The arrangement extends an existing relationship serving onshore substations to support offshore infrastructure in the North Sea.
The announced capacity expansion uses EUTELSAT 10B, a geostationary communications satellite. Eutelsat supplies satellite capacity, and EuroSkyPark provides the communications service connecting infrastructure sites with operational networks. The announcement describes additional capacity for more locations and an alternative communications route to terrestrial networks.
That service carries information used to operate electrical infrastructure. It does not transmit the electricity itself. A substation changes voltage levels or connects parts of the power network; communications allow equipment status and operating information to pass between such sites and control functions.
EuroSkyPark describes supervisory control and data acquisition, commonly called SCADA, as one of its satellite applications. In this context, communications support remote monitoring and control data. The requirement concerns the availability of an operational connection, rather than household internet access or consumer download speeds.
Amprion’s role is electricity transmission. Its 11,000-kilometer extra-high-voltage grid extends from the North Sea to the Alps and includes more than 165 switching and transformer stations. These are figures for Amprion’s overall grid, not counts of sites covered by the satellite agreement. The company participates in European coordination through ENTSO-E, the association of transmission system operators. Remote communications are part of the infrastructure required to supervise that network.
The North Sea extension gives the announcement a specific offshore component. It adds to the existing onshore arrangement rather than establishing an entirely new relationship with Amprion. The published announcement does not identify a total contract value or a complete list of newly connected sites.
Satellite connectivity can provide communications continuity when an organization needs a route separate from its terrestrial connections. That is the relevant function here: the satellite service supplies another means of exchanging operational data between locations.
Eutelsat and EuroSkyPark also describe a broader relationship involving geostationary services and the OneWeb low Earth orbit network. That broader portfolio should not be confused with the named capacity in this announcement. EUTELSAT 10B is the satellite identified for the Amprion expansion.
The disclosed change is additional satellite capacity and an extension of the service’s geographic application. Its operational purpose is to connect Amprion infrastructure, including North Sea offshore sites, with communications that do not depend on the same terrestrial route.
