What is the Copernicus Marine Service?

The Copernicus Marine Service is a part of the Copernicus Programme, a European Union flagship initiative for Earth Observation and Monitoring. It provides regular and systematic reference information on the physical state and dynamics of the oceans and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas.

The main users of the Copernicus Marine Service are marine and coastal environment service providers, national, European and international agencies, research institutions, the oil and gas industry, the offshore renewable energy sector, civil protection agencies, and the fisheries and aquaculture industry.

The data and services provided by the Copernicus Marine Service can be used in a wide range of applications, including:

  • Marine Safety: Support for marine operations, oil spill detection and drift forecasting, ship routing, design and operation of offshore structures.
  • Marine Resources: Fisheries management, aquaculture, and the blue economy.
  • Coastal and Marine Environment: Coastal protection, marine submersion forecasts, water quality monitoring, and marine protected areas management.
  • Weather, Seasonal Forecasting and Climate: Inputs for weather prediction, seasonal and climate forecasting, and climate change assessment.
  • Marine and Coastal Tourism: Information for beach safety, route planning for cruises and yachts, and support for recreational fishing.

The Copernicus Marine Service offers free and open access to its data and information. This provides a valuable resource for improving our understanding of the world’s oceans and seas and for developing sustainable management strategies.
