The core values of ISS for research are the unique microgravity and harsh space environments. The attached document published in 2018 enumerates the “benefits to humanity” resulting from research on ISS.
Unfortunately inspite of thousands of experiments, the ISS has delivered very limited “concrete benefits” relative to economic value.
It is encouraging to note that as of 2018 there were 15 commercial research services available on the ISS which make it easier for companies to deploy experiments.
