Synopsis
The UK Severe Space Weather Preparedness Strategy is a document that outlines the UK government’s approach to managing the risk of severe space weather events and enhancing the country’s resilience to such events over the next five years. The strategy is focused on three pillars: Assess, Prepare, and Respond & Recover.
- Assess: Enhancing the understanding of severe space weather, its impacts, and the ability to forecast events. This includes increasing observational and forecasting capabilities and understanding the impacts on areas such as aircraft safety, human health, and Position, Navigation, and Timing services.
- Prepare: Increasing the resilience of essential infrastructure and services. This involves developing and testing response plans, engaging with industry partners, and establishing governance structures and international response coordination.
- Respond & Recover: Ensuring the UK can effectively respond to and recover from severe space weather events. This includes deepening cooperation with international partners and establishing a real-time communication system for mutual sharing of data during such events.
The strategy emphasizes the importance of collaboration between government, academia, and industry, as well as working closely with international partners to prepare for and respond to the risk of severe space weather events.
