The Space Safety Coalition (SSC) is an international coalition of satellite operators, government entities, industry representatives, and other key stakeholders that actively promotes responsible space safety.
It was established in 2019 to develop and publish best practices for the long-term sustainability of space operations. These best practices are applicable to all spacecraft regardless of size, orbit, or purpose.
The SSC’s membership includes a diverse set of industry and government actors representing a wide range of the space ecosystem. This includes satellite operators, launch providers, spacecraft manufacturers, SSA companies, and other stakeholders.
Key activities of the SSC include:
- Coordinating among members to drive adoption of best practices and international standards for space sustainability.
- Serving as a forum for industry collaboration and consensus-building on space safety topics.
- Publishing and updating the “Best Practices for the Sustainability of Space Operations” document. This covers topics like debris mitigation, collision avoidance, information sharing, and end-of-life disposal.
The SSC aims to promote the adoption of responsible practices across the industry to ensure the safety and sustainability of the space environment. Its best practices and industry coordination serve as a model for space governance.
