The European Defense Fund (EDF) has announced a significant investment in the development of an “Autonomous SSA Bodyguard Onboard Satellite” system, nicknamed Bodyguard, as part of its latest funding round. This move comes amidst growing concerns over the increasing threats to space assets posed by the anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons being developed by Russia and China. The Bodyguard project aims to enhance Europe’s independence and superiority in space by providing a defensive capability that can track and potentially disable or destroy threatening enemy satellites.

The Bodyguard Project

The Bodyguard project, which was among the winning bids gathered by the EDF in 2023, has been allocated nearly €6.5 million ($7 million) in funding. The project involves a consortium of companies from eight European Union countries, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Sweden. The consortium is being coordinated by Agenium Space, a Toulouse-based company, and the project is expected to run for 36 months.

The Bodyguard system is designed to operate in close proximity to potential threat satellites. It will be equipped with sensors capable of detecting weak points in these satellites and can counteract threats using a robot or laser system. The specific details of the Bodyguard’s capabilities and intended orbit have not been disclosed.
