HIMERA and GomSpace have begun operating OBRIA NANO, a test satellite supporting development of a proposed independent Ukrainian communications network. Their October 27 operational update follows the spacecraft’s October 1 launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission.
The spacecraft is conducting technical tests intended to guide the design of the operational OBRIA system. The newly reported milestone is initial orbital operation, distinct from the earlier launch.
The companies envisage a satellite network providing communications coverage across Ukraine and complementing European satellite networks. They describe Ukrainian operational control as a central element of the initiative, with the longer-term purpose of reducing dependence on external communications providers.
Localizing production of satellites and ground communications terminals in Ukraine is another planned step. That would extend the project beyond operating spacecraft to developing domestic manufacturing capabilities.
OBRIA NANO is a technology test spacecraft, not a completed national communications network. The announcement provides no measured service capacity or date for full deployment. The immediate work is orbital testing to inform the operational system’s design.
