NATO Opens Consultation on Space Domain Operational Functions

The NATO Communications and Information Agency opened an industry consultation on October 29, 2026, to inform its planned acquisition of Space Domain Operational Functions capabilities. The request for information invites companies to contribute knowledge about available solutions and potential procurement approaches.

The official opportunity notice identifies the consultation as RFI-192934-SDOF. It is a pre-competitive market-research exercise through which the agency will develop its understanding of industry capabilities before a future acquisition.

The consultation asks industry to review draft requirements and provide feedback on performance, competition, efficiency, and acquisition risks. This process gives the agency information about how suppliers could deliver the intended operational functions and how procurement could be organized.

NATO’s use of space capabilities includes communications, navigation, timing, and information supporting military operations. New Space Economy’s account of NATO’s space strategy explains how these services support forces operating on Earth and how space has become an operational domain within alliance planning.

For this consultation, companies can provide written responses and participate in a dedicated Space Domain Operational Functions workshop at NATO Edge. The event is scheduled for November 17–19 in Izmir, Türkiye. The workshop will allow participants to discuss the agency’s proposed approach and obtain clarification.

Written responses are due by noon Central European Time on December 3, 2026. The request for information establishes the industry-engagement stage of the program, with feedback informing the agency’s subsequent acquisition planning.
