The Callisto reusable-rocket demonstrator has begun ground qualification work at the Diamant site in French Guiana. France’s space agency, CNES, reported on October 29, 2026, that a full-scale mockup had completed a week of tests involving antennas, radar, and launch-site infrastructure.
The campaign used CIPAL, a mockup equipped with six antennas in their intended flight configuration. The CNES test announcement describes work to validate interfaces between the vehicle and ground systems, together with operating procedures and communications arrangements for ascent and descent.
These activities examine how the launch site interacts with the vehicle. Antenna placement and ground equipment must function together as the vehicle changes position and orientation during flight. The mockup enables teams to exercise those interfaces at full scale before the flight vehicle arrives.
Ground qualification is scheduled to continue through 2027. The flight vehicle will follow the qualification work.
A Vertical Takeoff and Landing Demonstrator
Callisto is a joint project involving CNES, the German Aerospace Center, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The three-agency program develops and tests technologies for a rocket stage that takes off vertically and returns for a powered landing.
According to the CNES project description, the demonstrator is approximately 13 meters tall and 1.1 meters in diameter. Its Japanese engine uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen and is designed to restart and vary its thrust.
Throttle control allows the engine to change the force it produces during flight. Restart capability supports separate powered phases, including the return and landing sequence. Together, these functions enable experiments with the propulsion operations used by a vertically landing vehicle.
The planned campaign comprises 10 test flights, with flights reaching approximately 20 kilometers in altitude. The program examines flight operations and the work involved in preparing the same vehicle for another launch.
