Momentus has secured a contract to host an OQ Technology communications payload on Vigoride-9, with launch planned for the fourth quarter of 2027. The November 3 announcement describes a mission intended to add capacity and coverage to OQ’s satellite Internet of Things network.
The payload uses 5G narrowband Internet of Things technology, commonly shortened to NB-IoT. Its antenna, feeder board, and electronics will be integrated with Vigoride for a planned operating period of several months. The arrangement places OQ’s equipment aboard a host spacecraft.
The planned service connects directly with user terminals. Momentus identifies industrial assets, infrastructure, logistics, and remote operations among the applications served by the payload. These uses involve exchanging operational information with equipment that may be located beyond terrestrial mobile-network coverage.
Internet of Things communications connect devices that collect or exchange data. A remote sensor, for example, may report a measurement or equipment status. Such traffic differs from a continuous broadband video stream: the useful information can be a relatively small message transmitted when a measurement is taken or an operating condition changes.
OQ describes satellite connectivity for agriculture, energy, maritime activity, and transportation among its service applications. These sectors use distributed equipment and moving assets, giving satellite links a role in collecting information from locations separated by large distances.
Vigoride’s hosted-payload role is part of the broader use of orbital vehicles for services beyond satellite delivery. New Space Economy’s examination of orbital transfer vehicles describes hosted operations alongside transport between deployment locations.
For the OQ mission, the announced arrangement combines the communications payload with Momentus’s spacecraft platform. Integration of the payload hardware precedes the planned Vigoride-9 launch and subsequent period of communications operations.
